Why does 上边 look like this?
上 (Shàng) is an ideogram showing a horizontal line with a vertical indicator pointing upwards, meaning 'up'. 边 (Biān) combines the 'walking' radical (辶) with a 'knife/limit' component (力 + 口), originally referring to the edge or boundary of a path. Together, they literally mean 'the upper edge' or 'above'.
