Why does 东西 look like this?

Originally a combination of the characters 'East' (东) and 'West' (西). In ancient Chinese culture, markets were often arranged along an east-west axis. When you went to buy things, you would travel between the east and west markets, eventually leading 'East-West' to mean 'things' or 'stuff' in general!
