Why does 中午 look like this?

'中' (zhōng) shows a line passing through the middle of a box, representing 'center' or 'middle'. '午' (wǔ) depicts a pestle or a cross-bar used to represent the time when the sun is directly overhead. Together, the 'middle' of the 'noon hour' gives us midday!
