Why does 六 look like this?
The character is a primary radical in its own right (Radical 12). Originally, it was a pictograph representing a simple shelter or tent, but it has been borrowed for its sound to mean the number six. In modern script, you can see the 'top' (亠) and 'legs' (八) supporting the structure!
