Why does 吗 look like this?
The left side is the 'mouth' radical (口 kǒu), and the right side is the 'horse' character (马 mǎ). This is a 'phono-semantic' character: the mouth radical tells you it's about speaking (asking a question), while the horse part gives you a hint about the sound (mǎ -> ma)!
