Why does 地 look like this?
The left side is the radical '土' (tǔ), representing 'earth' or 'soil.' The right side is '也' (yě), which originally depicted a snake but here functions as a phonetic component that also suggests a stretching, flat surface. Together, they represent the earth we stand on!
