Why does 帮 look like this?
The top part is '邦' (bāng), which provides the sound and historically refers to a state or nation. The bottom part is the radical '巾' (jīn), representing a piece of cloth. Originally, it referred to the 'sides' or 'binding' of a shoe, but it evolved to signify the act of 'helping' or 'backing someone up', much like how a cloth panel supports a shoe!
