Why does 放学 look like this?
'放' (fàng) combines '方' (square/direction) and '攵' (tap/action), originally meaning to drive animals out to pasture. '学' (xué) depicts a child '子' under a roof '宀' with hands '𦥑' teaching. Together, they literally mean "releasing the students from their studies"!
