Why does 来 look like this?
Originally, this character was a pictograph of a wheat plant. In ancient times, wheat was considered a gift that 'came' from heaven, so the character was borrowed to mean 'to come'. It consists of a central pillar (resembling the stalk) and two people-like shapes (人) on the sides, though it's easier to remember it as a plant with roots and leaves!
