Why does 汉语 look like this?
The word 汉语 (Hànyǔ) is made of two characters. 汉 (Hàn) consists of the water radical (氵) and the component 又 (yòu), originally referring to the Han River and later the Han people. 语 (yǔ) combines the speech radical (讠) with 五 (wǔ, five) and 口 (kǒu, mouth), representing words spoken from the mouth. Together, they mean the 'language of the Han people.'
