Why does 谢谢 look like this?
The character 谢 (xiè) is made of two parts: on the left is the 'speech' radical (讠), and on the right is 'shoot/wither' (射). It originally meant 'to decline' or 'to step down' by using words, but now it's our favorite way to express gratitude! When you say it twice as '谢谢', it becomes the common way to say thanks.
