Why does 贵 look like this?
The top part is '中' (middle) over '一' (one), which actually evolved from a basket/container for valuables. The bottom is the '贝' (shell) radical, representing money or currency because ancient Chinese people used shells as money. Together, they signify something rare and valuable kept in a container!
