Free Chinese vocabulary flashcard · HSK 4

Why does 帽子 look like this?

The first character 帽 (mào) is made of 巾 (jīn, meaning 'cloth') on the left and 冒 (mào, meaning 'to cover') on the right, perfectly describing something that covers you with cloth! The second character 子 (zi) is a very common suffix used for nouns in Chinese. Together, they literally mean a cloth cover for your head!
