Why does 矮 look like this?
The character consists of 矢 (shǐ), meaning 'arrow', and 委 (wěi), meaning 'to give or entrust'. In ancient times, an arrow was used as a standard measure of length. Being as short as an arrow or 'bowing' (委) down suggests something of low height. Together, they represent the concept of being short or low!
