Why does 需要 look like this?
'需' (xū) features 'rain' (雨) at the top, originally suggesting waiting for rain or an essential need, combined with '而' (ér) for phonetic/structural balance. '要' (yào) shows a figure (女) and a person's waist, originally meaning 'waist' but now representing the 'essential' part or a strong desire/requirement. Together, they form the concept of necessity!
